My name is Chevon Gilzene and I am in my fifth year here at York. I am a music major with a double major in international development studies. I chose York because of the sense of community. Even though York is a large university, there are many opportunities to connect with people with similar goals and interests. I absolutely love the music program at York because of its holistic, open minded approach. They encourage collaboration with other AMPD students and provide many opportunities for students to be creative in the path they choose.
The professors care about preparing students for the reality of the music industry, which is that even as a performer, one has to be prepared to teach, conduct, compose, or switch between genres. This is amazing for me because I aspire to teach music to at risk youth around the world through my music academies and stress the importance of music in education. My planned career path is not conventional and so I appreciate studying at a school where I am encouraged to be different and change the world. York University knows that each student is an individual and treats our education as unique to every individual.
As a student in AMPD, I am able to collaborate with other AMPD students. There are many productions and projects that require students from different fields and streams to work together. Getting involved on campus outside of AMPD is also important to me. Networking opportunities are a key to success after school. I am a firm believer that your time here at York is what you make of it, so take every opportunity to grow while you are here.
