Programs and Options

The School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design (AMPD) offers four undergraduate degrees. All Honours degree programs are comprised of 120 credits; Bachelor degree programs consist of 90 credits.

Bachelor of Arts (Honours)

Students who concentrate their studies in theory, history and criticism within their major discipline will graduate with a BA Honours degree. Honours BA degrees are available in Cinema & Media Arts, DanceComputational Arts, Music, Theatre and Visual Art & Art History.

Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours)

Students who concentrate in studio, performance or production work within their major discipline will graduate with a BFA Honours degree. Honours BFA degrees are available in Cinema & Media Arts, DanceMusic, Theatre and Visual Art & Art History.

Bachelor of Design (Honours)

This professional program is offered by the Department of Design in the York University School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design.

Bachelor of Arts

The BA with majors in Dance, Film, Music, Theatre and Visual Arts provides students with a further range of options, including preparation for a number of professional careers such as: creative arts therapy, arts administration, arts journalism, arts marketing, cultural tourism, community arts and cultural management. Students may apply to the BA program upon completion of 24 credits.


Options within AMPD Degrees

Honours Double Major Program

The Honours Double Major program allows students to combine a major in dance, film, music, theatre or visual arts with a second major offered through the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies or the Faculty of Health. Fine Arts students in the Honours Double Major program must satisfy the basic degree requirements of the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design  and graduate with either an Honours BA or Honours BFA degree from AMPD.

For further information on the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies and the Faculty of Health, refer to the respective section of the York University Undergraduate Calendar, or the supplementary mini-calendars published by individual programs. Students enrolled in the Honours Double Major program complete the credits required for the second major within the context of their AMPD degree requirements. No AMPD electives are required in this program. Note: Some Double Major combinations may require more than 120 credits.

Honours Double Major BA Degree Program within the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design

The Honours Double Major BA degree within the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design allows students to combine a major in dance, film, music, theatre or visual arts with a second major offered through dance, film, music, theatre or visual arts. The Specialized Honours BA program may be pursued jointly with other Specialized Honours BA or BFA programs in AMPD. While the Honours Double Major BA degree within AMPD may be pursued jointly with another Specialized Honours BA or BFA program in the School, the Honours Double Major combination of two Honours BFA programs is not an option. Some Honours Double Major combinations may require more than 120 credits.

Honours BA Minor in Arts, Media, Performance and Design

The School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design (AMPD) is pleased to announce a new interdisciplinary Honours BA Minor in Arts, Media, Performance and Design.

The Minor in AMPD is a flexible program that students customize according to their goals and interests. Drawing on courses throughout AMPD, students are able to design an individualized Minor program intended to provide a meaningful, applicable learning experience to accelerate their career path and insert additional areas of interest to their degree.

Recognizing that creativity is a transferable skill in critical demand across all sectors, the interdisciplinary Minor in AMPD provides students across York University the opportunity to participate in a wide array of artistic disciplines that complement or enhance their studies.

Students pursuing the Minor are able to take courses across AMPD’s departments of Cinema and Media Arts, Computational Arts, Dance, Design, Music, Theatre, and Visual Art and Art History.

Honours Major/Minor

BA and BFA students who wish to combine their major in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design with a secondary concentration may pursue a minor program in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, the Faculty of Environmental Studies, the Faculty of Science & Engineering, or the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design. Students enrolled in the Honours Major/Minor program complete the credits required for the minor within the context of their AMPD degree requirements. Minor programs offered by the Faculties  of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, Environmental Studies, and Science & Engineering are described in the Undergraduate Calendar, and in the mini-calendars published by individual programs. Note: Some Major/Minor combinations may require more than 120 credits.

Coregistration in the Faculty of Education

Students registered in the BA, the Honours BA or the Honours BFA in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design, may apply for admission to the Concurrent Program of the Faculty of Education, and work towards the BEd. An AMPD Honours degree will take six years when pursued concurrently with the Bachelor of Education degree. Students interested in teaching at the primary, junior and intermediate levels could complete a BA degree and BEd in six years. Please consult the Faculty of Education or OSP@edu.yorku.ca.
