BFA Alumna Iris Ng Receives Hot Docs Spotlight

Iris Ng, a BFA (’01) alumna, is set to receive a spotlight alongside legendary director Raoul Peck at the 2024 Hot Docs festival. Hot Docs will be celebrating the remarkable careers of cinematographer Iris Ng and director Raoul Peck, according to an announcement from the festival.

As per a release from Hot Docs on March 19, 2024, Ng will be honoured through the Hot Docs annual Focus On program, spotlighting the remarkable work of Canadian filmmakers and craftspeople who have left an indelible mark on the documentary landscape, showcasing their invaluable contributions to the art form.

Ng is a graduate of the Film Production program in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design (AMPD) at York University with a background in still photography, visual art, and music. While studying at York, she began her cinematography career by shooting her first independent feature film on 16mm. Since then, her credits include Sarah Polley’s multi-award-winning Stories We Tell (2012) and the hit Netflix true crime series Making a Murderer (2015). Several Hot Docs openers credit Ng as cinematographer, including Twice Colonized (2023), A.rtificial I.mmortality (2021), and The League of Exotique Dancers (2016). Other acclaimed titles on her resume include Shirkers (2017), The Apology (2016), and One of Ours (2021). Ng’s notable work turns a critical lens on social justice, marginalized communities, and the process of filmmaking itself.
