AMPD grooves with Summer Jazz Intensive

AMPD grooves with summer jazz intensive

The Department of Music’s annual Summer Jazz and Goorve Lab had a triumphant in-person return this summer, welcoming over 50 high school students to the York Campus for a week-long intensive with industry-defining talents. Professors Noam Lemish and Mike Cado initiated, organized and directed this lab on behalf of AMPD Music, bringing the department’s teachings and expertise to a whole new audience.

Students worked with a broad range of musical styles, including Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, Gospel, and Hip-Hop, while blending in musical traditions from around the world. Under the mentorship of internationally renowned Faculty, including  Juno award-winning musicians Matt Brubeck, Karen Burke, Corey Butler, Tara Davidson, Jon Maharaj, Kevin Turcotte and Sundar Viswanathan,  young musicians deepened their interest in contemporary styles of music will provide a vibrant environment for growth and discovery.

The courses included masterclasses in vocals, brass, woodwinds, guitar, piano, bass, drums/percussion, and strings, dependent on student interest. All participants took exploratory courses, including Improvising Outside the Box, Intersections of Jazz and Popular Music, An Introduction to Gospel Music Traditions, and Rhythms of the World. Click here to learn more about the 2022 Summer Jazz and Groove Lab.
