The York University Singers, an ensemble comprised of students and alumni from York’s School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design (AMPD), took the stage at the world-renowned Carnegie Hall in New York City on Saturday, May 24, 2025.
Under the direction of Professor Lisette Canton, the ensemble included 26 current and former AMPD Music students, joined by other choirs from Toronto, Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles, and professional musicians, including the New England Symphonic Ensemble, organist Barint Karosi, and soloists Sarah Joyce Cooper and Teresa Buchholz, performing the Vivaldi Gloria, all under Canton’s direction.
The five-day residency was a significant opportunity for AMPD students and alumni to perform in one of the most prestigious concert halls in the world.
“Performing with my fellow AMPD musicians at such an iconic venue was an unforgettable experience—both exhilarating and deeply affirming,” says Music alumna Karen Frank (BFA ’21, MA ’24,). “Sharing the stage with talented peers in a space filled with history reminded me of the incredible community and standard of excellence that Professor Canton fosters at York.”

Frank earned her MA in Musicology at AMPD, with a focus on choral studies under the mentorship of Professor Canton. She is now pursuing a doctorate in conducting at Boston University.
“My time at AMPD gave me not only the technical skills but also the collaborative mindset essential to a sustainable artistic life. Opportunities like this performance continue to inspire me to push boundaries creatively and to remain connected to the vibrant network of artists I met during my time at York.”
Professor Canton summarizes, “One of my goals in training young artists is to provide opportunities for them to develop as performers and to gain experience by bringing the music to life in some of the world’s most prominent and historic venues. After conducting at Carnegie Hall for the fourth time, I know how life changing this experience is.
For most of the York University Singers, this was their first time ever at Carnegie Hall and I am proud to have shared the
stage in this legendary venue with these fine young musicians. It is an experience they will never forget.”
As head of choral conducting in York’s Department of Music, Lisette Canton directs the York University Chamber Choir and Concert Choir, and teaches choral and orchestral conducting. She is also Founder and Artistic Director of the JUNO award-winning Ottawa Bach Choir.
