Biography

Bassist, composer, collaborator, researcher and settler Dr. Phil Albert (he/him) lives and works in Tkaronto in Treaty 13 territory and frequently works in many nations across Turtle Island. He has released ten records as a leader/co-leader, played on hundreds of recordings (including 2 Juno nominees), and performed over a thousand shows in in a varied musical career spanning genres and rhetorical dispositions. As a multigenerational music teacher, a love of teaching has flourished in varied spaces: university classes, Montessori programs, summer camps, high-school clinics, as well as working as an educational developer/curriculum designer at the University of Toronto Center for Teaching Support and Innovation. As an educator, Phil is dedicated to inclusion, equity, and attempting to make music fun. His recently completed doctoral research explores teamwork, inclusion, and collective creativity in small jazz and creative music groups. Some recent records are “Situations” by Situations, and “Beautiful Landscape” vol 1 and 2 by Sonic Perfume. Bandcamp is cool. Some highlight professional performances include with personal heroes including Mike Stern, Okkyung Lee, Mark O’Conner, Brent Mason, Duke Robillard, and Hugh Fraser, to name a few.
