Biography

Edward Moroney is an organist-choirmaster, composer and accompanist in Toronto. A graduate of the Univ. of Toronto in composition and vocal music education, he studied with John Beckwith, Derek Holman, Oskar Morawetz and Lloyd Bradshaw. As a chorister at St. Michael’s Cathedral Choir School, he studied organ with Victor Togni, and with Charles Peaker and Douglas Bodle at the Univ. of Toronto. Mr. Moroney is a former organ-scholar of St. Chad’s College, Durham University (UK), a diploma-holder of both the English and Canadian Royal Colleges of Organists (FRCCO, CHM & ARCO, CHM), and a fellow of several learned societies. Mr. Moroney was the founding accompanist of the Canadian Children’s Opera Chorus, and for many years was the accompanist of the Toronto Mendelssohn Youth Choir, the Orpheus Choir of Toronto, Opera-in-Concert Chorus, the Univ. of Toronto Women’s Chorus, and the Ont. Youth Choir (2007, 2016). He was the accompanist for “Podium” (2002), University Voices (2006), and twice an external adjudicator for the CBC radio Choral Competition (2026, 2008). Mr. Moroney accompanies the TMYC and St. Michael’s Cathedral Choir School on three CDs, and has played for many distinguished choral conductors, including Lisette Canton (York Univ.), Robert Cooper (35 years), Elmer Iseler, Lloyd Bradshaw, Sir John Rutter and Robert Sund, both in concerts, tours and broadcasts. At the Univ. of Toronto, he was the only studio accompanist for the legendary voice teacher Irene Jessner. Mr. Moroney accompanied the Orpheus Choir of Toronto (2003-2019), two choirs at York University (2014 -), and was the organist-choirmaster of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church (1998-2019), and has been the occasional organist of H.M. Chapel Royal of the Mohawk (Bay of Quinte) since 2005. He was awarded the Order of the Diocese of Toronto (ODT) in 2018. In 1973, Mr. Moroney was awarded the inaugural Leslie Bell Choral Conducting Scholarship (Ont. Arts Council). He was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal (2002), the Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012), and is a Knight Commander of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jersusalem (KCHS), Holy See (2015). Mr. Moroney was awarded the ARSCM in 2025. He continues to accompany the classical choirs at York University (Dr. Lisette Canton, conductor).
