Biography

After 55 years at the drums, Barry has established himself as
one of Canada’s most unique drum set stylists. Barry has worked with
some of Canada’s finest musicians, led his own groups,
accompanied international artists, and has been featured on
over 150 recordings, including 20 as a leader.
 Barry was a Juno Award winning sideman in 1991 and has 11 more Juno nominations. Barry Romberg’s Random Access was nominated for best electric group at the National Jazz Awards in 2005/06/07/09; Random Access won Best Electric Group in 2008. Barry was also nominated for Drummer of the Year in 2006/07/08/09 at
the NJA; And in 2008 The Random Access Large Ensemble
was nominated for Best Big Band as well as Barry for Producer
of the Year at the NJA. The CD by The Random Access Large Ensemble “Existential Detective” was nominated for a Juno Award in the Contemporary Jazz Recording category in 2009.
 Over the years Barry has worked with the likes of; Gil Evans,
Hank Jones, Joe Henderson, Lee Konitz, Donny McCaslin,
Ben Monder, Don Pullen, Kenny Wheeler, Ritchie Bierach, Don
Byron, Sam Rivers, Rez Abassi, Jeff Coffin and George Garzone
to name a few. Barry is also a featured member of bands led by:
Michael Occhipinti, Geoff Young, Kirk Macdonald, Lorne Lofsky and Al Henderson. Barry has been part of the music faculty at York University for 21 years as well as Humber College from 2005-2021 and Community Music from 2005-2013. www.barry-romberg.com
