Three honourees from York University’s School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design (AMPD) have been appointed to the Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest civilian honours.
The three AMPD honourees are part of a group of seven York-affiliated recipients included in 61 new appointments announced this year.
The Order of Canada recognizes individuals whose service and contributions have had a lasting impact on communities across Canada and beyond.

Niv Fichman, alumnus and honorary degree recipient
Academy Award-winning producer Niv Fichman (LLD Hons. ’98) has helped shape Canadian cinema over nearly five decades. As founder of Rhombus Media, his body of work includes internationally recognized films such as The Red Violin, Enemy and BlackBerry.

Tim Whiten, professor emeritus
Artist and professor emeritus Tim Whiten has built an influential career spanning five decades. Working across sculpture, drawing, performance and installation, his practice explores spirituality and transformation while his teaching has shaped generations of students.
Nancy Nicol, professor emerita and senior scholar
Nancy Nicol is a documentary filmmaker, researcher and writer whose work documents the history of 2SLGBTQIA+ activism in Canada and internationally. Through her participatory research project, Envisioning Global LGBT Human Rights, she fostered international collaboration and advanced equity and human rights.
