York University’s School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design (AMPD) has received renewed funding for an additional three years for the Nick Nurse Foundation Summer Jazz & Groove Lab. This continued support, $20,000 per year through 2027, will ensure that young musicians can access this unique summer camp experience.
Originally launched in 2021, the Lab was envisioned by AMPD Music Professors Mike Cadó and Noam Lemish. Thanks to an initial $40,000 donation from Nick Nurse—Head Coach of the Philadelphia 76ers and former coach of the Toronto Raptors—the program has now run for four consecutive years. “I’m always delighted to support music programs that nurture and enhance the talents of students,” says Nurse.
A portion of the donation has also supported bursaries for high school students who are Black, Indigenous and/or people of colour, as well as young women.
What can students expect from this experience? Running from July 21 to July 25, 2025, participants will engage in instrumental masterclasses, workshops, improvisation sessions, theory lessons and guided listening seminars.
“The Summer Jazz & Groove Lab is a unique opportunity for high school students to come to AMPD and study with nationally recognized instructors,” says Lemish.
Cadó adds, “Many students use this opportunity to meet, socialize and connect with other students who are also interested in music.”
Throughout this immersive week, students will have the chance to explore a range of musical styles, including jazz, rhythm and blues, gospel, hip-hop and a fusion of global traditions.
Returning clinicians include an impressive lineup of acclaimed musicians and educators, including Juno-winning and internationally recognized jazz and gospel artists. Among them are AMPD Professors Sundar Viswanathan, Karen Burke and Lorne Lofsky.
This three-year renewal underscores the Nick Nurse Foundation’s ongoing dedication to providing students with equitable access to both sports and the arts.
