This Annual Theatre Festival is Completely Run by Students
Founded in 1992, playGround is a student-made and student-run theatre festival. The festival allows York University students from all faculties to submit short 15 minute plays, concepts, and mono-dramas. Every year, a jury of theatre students review submissions and choose a dozen shows to be a part of the playGround Festival. The festival is open for all York University students to perform in or participate behind the scenes as crew members. It is a great opportunity for theatre students and non-theatre students alike to obtain extracurricular experience performing, directing, writing, designing and constructing for the stage. And the final short plays are fully mounted with costume, professional lighting and set pieces.
As of the 2019-20 school year, playGround Festival has been officially ratified as a club by the York Federation of Students, giving the festival more benefits like a constitution, more rehearsal spaces, and a budget. In this video, the 2020 playGround Festival artistic directors discuss the submission process for playGround as well as what the ratification process was like for them.
