Alum Lenka Lichtenberg wins 2023 JUNO Award for global music album “Thieves of Dreams”

Lenka Lichtenberg

AMPD music alum Lenka Lichtenberg (MA ’93) took home the 2023 Juno Awards for Global Music Album Of The Year with her latest album, Thieves of Dreams, at the ceremony in Edmonton, Alberta.

Lichtenberg uses her late grandmother’s, Anna Hana, recently discovered journals as inspiration for Thieves of Dreams: Songs of Theresienstadt’s Secret Poetess. Hana wrote the journals between 1940 and 1945, before and during her incarceration (1942-1945) in the Terezin (Theresienstadt) World War II concentration camp. Lichtenberg expertly weaves her Hana’s powerful poems of love, relationships and dreams of far-away places into a stunning musical and spoken word performance.

Lichtenberg wasn’t the only AMPD alum nominated for a 2023 JUNO award. Cikwes Nehiyaw Sou (MA ’22) was nominated for Traditional Indigenous Artist Or Group Of The Year with kâkîsimo ᑳᑮᓯᒧᐤ, while Benjamin Whiteley (MA ’18) and Karen Ng (BFA ’07) of The Weather Station Next Door were nominated for Adult Alternative Album Of The Year How Is It That I Should Look At The Stars. Finally, Adrean Farrugia (MA ’21) and Tara Davidson (MA ’21) helped Ernesto Cervini earn a Jazz Album Of The Year (Solo) nomination for Joy. Davidson also received a Jazz Album Of The Year (Group) nomination with Carn Davidson 9 for The History of Us.
