Kara Hamilton named the 2025 L.L. Odette Sculptor in Residence

Renowned Canadian contemporary sculptor Kara Hamilton will join York University’s School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design (AMPD) as the next L.L. Odette Sculptor in Residence.

Beginning this May, Hamilton will work closely with AMPD students, offering them a rare opportunity to engage with an artist whose innovative work is at the forefront of contemporary sculpture.

Hamilton is a Toronto-based artist known for her groundbreaking use of found objects, exploring materiality and the stories embedded in discarded materials. With a multidisciplinary background in visual art, design and architecture, Hamilton brings new life to everyday objects.

The 2025 L.L. Odette Sculptor in Residence Program is part of a broader collaboration between AMPD and the Lassonde Art Trail (LAT), a public art initiative that is being developed along Toronto’s waterfront set to open in 2026. Spanning 4.2 kilometres, the trail will offer a scenic, walkable path overlooking Lake Ontario.

Through this residency program, AMPD students will have the opportunity to collaborate with Hamilton on an artistic project developed for the trail, contributing to a lasting legacy of public art that will engage both the local community and international visitors. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to learn from Hamilton while exploring the logistics and challenges of producing art for public spaces.

As the 2025 residency approaches, the L.L. Odette Sculptor in Residence Program continues to play a key role in advancing AMPD’s mission to fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, promoting public engagement with art, and preparing students to be leaders in the creative industries.

About the L.L. Odette Sculptor in Residence Program

The L.L. Odette Sculptor in Residence Program was established in York University’s School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design in 2000. This annual residency brings leading sculptors to campus to create work, mentor and empower emerging artists. The residency fosters a dynamic learning environment that supports the advancement of the art of sculpture and gives undergraduate visual arts students the opportunity to extend their creative practice by observing and working hands-on in a wide range of professional sculpture techniques and media alongside eminent visiting artists. The public is invited to share in the experience each year through a free public lecture given by the sculptor-in-residence.
