Program Overview

Develop your craft as an actor in York University’s Theatre - Acting and Performance program, a specialized studio-based program focused on acting for stage and screen. You’ll train in performance techniques, character creation and multiple acting methods while learning how to build fully embodied, compelling performances drawn from diverse dramatic sources.

After completing a common first year with all Theatre students, you’ll move into a focused sequence of courses in Acting, Devised Theatre, Voice, Movement and other specialized performance classes. Over three years of intensive training, you’ll develop the technical, creative and collaborative skills needed for careers in acting, performing arts, theatre, film, television and digital performance.

You’ll also benefit from year-round performance opportunities, both in and outside the classroom, under the supervision of professional faculty working in performance fields today. By the time you graduate, you’ll have strong acting technique, extensive performance experience and the confidence to step into a range of roles across the performing arts and screen industries.

In addition to the degree requirements of all Theatre Majors, students pursuing a BFA Hons in Acting & Performance or Performance Creation are required to take:

  • Theatre and Social Justice
  • History of Theatre and Performance
  • 33 studio credits (for Flexible Performance Creation students) or 54 studio credits (for Focused Acting & Performance) within the offerings of the Department (see “YEAR 2-4” below for more about our Flexible and Focused pathways). Studio courses often require an application and/or supplementary evaluation for admission and upper-level courses for specialized skills often have pre-requisite courses offered at the 2000 level.

At AMPD, I used the skills I learned in acting class and beyond to explore storytelling in a way that truly suited me. Theatre students and faculty members are some of the kindest people you will ever meet. I felt welcomed and encouraged each day as I navigated my way through first year. Course Overview

Year One

The first year is a Foundation Year common to all Theatre students, and includes courses in Acting, Production and Design, and Performance Creation. At the end of the first year, students may apply, either by audition or interview, to move into one of the BFA degree programs, or continue as BA students. Students may apply to the Theatre Program in AMPD as Honours BA or Honours BFA Theatre majors, during which there are plenty of opportunities for hands-on learning and being involved in the many aspects of theatre making.

First Year Highlights 
  • Prime Time, held throughout the year, offers students the chance to connect with esteemed alumni and industry professionals and engage openly on issues relevant to theatre makers. 
  • PlayGROUND, is a student-run theatre festival that offers students a chance to showcase their talents and work collaboratively with friends and colleagues to mount new works. 
  • Each first-year student has a dedicated faculty advisor who provides support and guidance. Students are encouraged to meet with faculty advisors at least once each term.

Years Two to Four

The Acting & Performance Program offers rigorous studio-based training. Students study acting, devising, voice, movement and specialized skills over the three final years of the degree, which are then applied to performances. Students map their own route through the program, with flexible options for studio courses in third and fourth year. Upper-year students perform their Capstone Projects in either our renowned Devised Theatre Festival, or on Theatre@York’s main stages featuring Canadian, international, classic and contemporary plays directed by Theatre industry professionals.

FAQs

Yes, a supplementary evaluation is required for this program. Prospective students entering their first year should visit the How to Apply page to learn more. Current first-year students should review our Next Steps process.

Yes. Online auditions are available for students who are unable to attend campus due to distance or other circumstances. You may submit your audition performance videos online as part of your supplementary application. If we require more information, we may contact you to arrange a brief  Zoom interview.
