As the 2025 year comes to a close, we’re highlighting alumni from York University’s School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design (AMPD) who continue to make an impact across creative industries.

York University has awarded more than $223,000 through its Black Research Seed Fund to support early-stage projects led by Black scholars. Among the nine recipients are three AMPD faculty members whose work challenges systemic barriers and expands approaches to knowledge creation.

AMPD Professor Syreeta Hector recently concluded the final performance of her solo work, Black Ballerina at Native Earth Performing Arts’ Aki Studio in Toronto. The piece, which has toured nationally for six years, explores the intersections of race, identity and classical ballet through Hector’s personal lens as a mixed-race artist and educator.
