AMPD Music student wins Canadian Screen Music Award

School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design (AMPD) fourth-year Music student and film composer Jaasmaan has won a Canadian Screen Music Award (CASMA) in the Best Original Score, Original Song category for his work on Path of the Wind, a Hindi and Malayalam film directed by Wasim Aliyar.

The win marks a major milestone for Jaasmaan, who has now received three CASMA nominations. Presented by the Screen Composers Guild of Canada, the awards recognize excellence in music for screen-based media across Canada.

“I’m immensely thankful to the Screen Composers Guild of Canada for this honour,” says Jaasmaan. “Getting a national-level award ignites a spark so powerful that I’m very certain this is the beginning of many beautiful things to come.”

Collaboration with AMPD Faculty

The award also reflects Jaasmaan’s connection to the AMPD Music community.

Professors Noam Lemish and Sundar Viswanathan both performed on the winning track, with Lemish on piano and Viswanathan on bansuri, an Indian flute.

He also credits his studies in the Music (BFA) program and the mentorship of professors Lemish, Viswanathan, Sarah Slean, John Castillo, Steven Munro and Randolph Peters with shaping his approach to composition, film music and sound.

“This award is monumental in my career in so many ways and I can't be thankful enough to my teachers,” says Jaasmaan.

He shares that Lemish, Viswanathan and Slean supported him through a particularly vulnerable period in his life, while Castillo and Munro helped him develop a deeper understanding of sound. His studies with Peters allowed him to further build on what he had learned about composing for film.

From CASMA nominee to award winner

The win follows Jaasmaan's recognition at last year’s Canadian Screen Music Awards, where he was nominated alongside established composers working across Canada’s screen industry. This year, he returned as a CASMA winner, marking another step in his developing career as a film composer.

Congratulations to Jaasmaan on this well-deserved recognition!
