AMPD Music student nominated for Canadian Screen Music Award alongside top industry composers

Jaasmaan Singh, a third-year Music student at York University, was nominated for a Canadian Screen Music Award (CASMA) in the category of Best Original Main Title Theme Music for his composition in The Flower at the End of the World. The short film, directed by Dipen Maharjan and produced by Soma Narayanan, features a score that highlights Jaasmaan’s distinctive voice as a young composer.

The nomination placed Jaasmaan in the same category as composers scoring projects for CBC, Amazon Prime and Netflix. The recognition highlights both his artistry and his promise at this stage in his career.

Reflecting on the nomination, he noted that his time at AMPD has been central to his growth as a composer.

“I want to dedicate a big part of this achievement to my professors who never gave up on me; when I lost faith in myself, they became that pillar of support,” he says. “Professors Noam Lemish and Sundar Viswanathan played a major role in encouraging me to keep going when things got tough.”

Jaasmaan attended the awards ceremony in Toronto with AMPD faculty, including Professors Sundar Viswanathan (right) and Noam Lemish (left), who joined him in celebrating this achievement.

From mentorship with world-class faculty to collaborations across film, theatre, and digital media, the program encourages students to push their creative boundaries and prepare for careers in today’s rapidly evolving cultural industries.

“I came into AMPD with a strong oral tradition and sense of melody but very little knowledge of Western music theory,” says Jaasmaan. “From that point, to now writing for the Budapest Symphony Orchestra and composing this score, I feel I’ve come a long way, and that happened because of what I learned here. Courses like Jazz Theory with Professor Noam Lemish and Intro to Film Scoring with Professor Sarah Slean gave me the foundation I needed as a composer.”

For Jaasmaan, the nomination itself carries deep significance at this stage in his career.

“This score was created on a budget of only $150, so to see it nominated alongside productions backed by million-dollar budgets feels like a huge achievement. For composers like me, there isn’t always a streamlined path to getting our work heard, which makes this recognition even more meaningful.”

This nomination places Jaasmaan among a community of screen composers shaping the future of music for media and highlights the remarkable level of talent and ambition emerging from AMPD.

“All of this makes me feel excited and confident about what the future holds for me. When you create something against all odds and it’s heard, it feels like a huge deal.”
