2024 Dean’s Student Leadership Award Recipient Announced

Dulce Martinez, a fourth-year Music student at York University, has recently been honoured with two distinguished awards: the Dean’s Leadership Award and the 2024 Robert J. Tiffin Student Leadership Award. These accolades recognize Dulce's exemplary leadership, dedication, and contributions to both the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design (AMPD) and the broader university community.

The Dean’s Leadership Award, an esteemed recognition within AMPD, celebrates Dulce’s outstanding leadership within her academic domain. Established to honour exceptional undergraduate students within AMPD, the award underscores Dulce’s proactive initiatives, elected positions, and unwavering commitment to equity and inclusion within her school.

One of her nominators remarked, “Her leadership and commitment to improving the community is admirable. I have also seen how her dedication to her craft and academics has inspired her classmates.”

In addition to the Dean’s Leadership Award, Dulce is the recipient of one of the 2024 Robert J. Tiffin Student Leadership Awards, which recognizes students from across the university. These students are role models who exhibit leadership, dedication, integrity, enthusiasm, and the demonstrated pursuit of excellence.

Throughout her time at York, Dulce has actively engaged in various leadership roles and campus organizations. From her membership in the Dean’s Student Advisory Committee to her participation in the President’s Ambassador program and her involvement with student associations like The Creative Arts Student Association and the Organization of Latin American Students, Dulce has demonstrated a dedication to student advocacy and representation.

Dulce attributes her motivation to pursue leadership roles to the encouragement and inspiration she received from faculty members who championed diversity and inclusivity. Her commitment to fostering meaningful connections and amplifying underrepresented voices has been instrumental in creating a vibrant and supportive community within AMPD and across the university.

As Dulce prepares to embark on the next phase of her academic journey in graduate school, she remains committed to effecting positive change. With a vision to mentor fellow students, particularly Latinas and women of colour, Dulce aims to empower others to pursue their academic and professional goals.

In offering advice to aspiring student leaders, Dulce emphasizes the importance of perseverance and passion, “Never allow feeling unqualified to stop you from working towards making an impact. Give yourself grace to grow while working towards causes you are passionate about.”
