Jessica Ortaleza

4th Year Dance Student

Hi! I am Jessica Ortaleza and I am a fourth year BFA Dance major streaming in Choreography and Performance, combined with a minor in BA Honours Political Science. I never sought dance as a career that I wanted to pursue, as I was always surrounded by the “typical” career pursuit of an engineer or nurse. However, I decided that pursing my dreams to my heart’s content was necessary.

I chose York not because of its convenience, but because of the sense of community, interdisciplinary influences and the value of the artistic practice. Throughout my years at York, I’ve gone through and continue to be on a journey of self-discovery that allows me to explore endless possibilities within the arts. My experience here has given me the opportunity to perform alongside many talented dancers and artists in many student run shows, hosted at York, as well as for emerging Toronto artists in the industry. I am currently the competitive director of York’s competitive team Integrated Entity, associated with the Hip Hop Club at York. My participation within clubs and organizations have shaped my experience at York to be one of the most thrilling social and educational opportunities.

After achieving my Bachelor’s degrees, I plan to continue my education in teacher’s college, while continuing to teach dance classes at various post-secondary institutions in Ontario.

The accumulated knowledge, skills, insight and collaboration that you experience here, pushes you to do things that you never sought possible without the fear of failure. Welcome! I look forward to meeting you!
