Congratulations to Gillian Helfield and FILM 1900: Cinema and the City!

We would like to congratulate Dr. Gillian Helfield and her AIF funded, fully online course FILM 1900: Cinema and the City for being selected as runner up in the eLearning category for the 2017 International E-Learning Awards.  The AMPD computing team deserves recognition as well for their dedicated support of Gillian and FILM 1900.  Their creative and technology-savvy team made Gillian’s ideas and her course come to life!

The progressive “in the city” shots of Gillian introducing her students to the content of the course surely impressed the committee.  Gillian’s course design, from the navigation utilizing a subway map, to the assessments allowing students to interact with the course material, their instructors and most importantly their peers, encouraging them to learn from one another, are only some of the reasons why FILM 1900 was chosen as runner up.  The competition was stiff this year with one winner, FILM 1900 as runner up, and 4 honourable mentions.

IELA – The International E-Learning Awards are given each year for the best work in e-learning, mobile learning, and blended learning, in two divisions: Academic and Business/Industry. All submissions are evaluated by the IELA Awards Committee, who look for a variety of attributes. These include, among others, educational soundness and effectiveness, usability, and overall significance.  Gillian is so deserving of this recognition because of her hard work, willingness to take risks, try something new, reflect on her experiences and work toward continual improvement and enhancement.

York University has many other course directors like Gillian and courses like FILM 1900 Cinema and City that deserve international recognition.  We encourage you to put your own courses forward for recognition.  For more information on the IELA – The International E-Learning Awards please visit their website.
