Professor Mary Fogarty released the first Hip Hop dance anthology published by an academic press with The Oxford Handbook of Hip Hop Dance Studies, co-edited by Imani Kai Johnson. Engaging with a broad range of research and performance genres, The Oxford Press states the anthology offers the most comprehensive research on Hip Hop dance to date. Filling a lacuna in both Hip Hop and dance studies, the Handbook places practitioners' voices at the forefront and in dialogue with theoretical insights, rooted in critical race theory, anticolonialism, intersectional feminism, and more.

On February 8, Members of the York University community congregated on campus to celebrate Black artistic talent with Word, Sound, Power: An Annual Celebration of Black Artistic Expression. The Jean Augustine Chair in Education, Community and Diaspora presented the showcase of music, dance, spoken word and performance.

Pamela Corales and Leo Lorilla, two core dancers from the Bayanihan: the National Dance Company of the Philippines, will perform at the York’s Annual Dance Showcase, “Cardinal Points,” on February 15–17, 7:30pm, at the Sandra Faire and Ivan Theatre. Anchored in the theme of global collaboration, “Cardinal Points” is directed by Susan Lee and will feature choreographic works from faculty members, undergraduate and graduate students, and the York Dance Ensemble.

A York University graduate program assistant and doctoral student was named among six recipients of the 2022 Women Who Rock Awards and one of six changemakers for racial equity as the recipient of the 2022 Award for Racial Justice in Creative Arts presented by Urban Alliance on Race Relations.

Dance Innovations 2022: Escalate featured new choreographic works by 23 fourth-year dance BFA students. Performed by students in all years of York’s undergraduate program in dance, this series engages with social justice-oriented themes of resistance and rebellion.

The York University School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design (AMPD) is delighted to be partnering with Toronto’s premiere international dance festival, Fall for Dance North (FFDN), for a cinematic exploration of how the art of screendance continues to evolve post-pandemic. 

Patrick Alcedo, York University professor and Chair of the Department of Dance in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design (AMPD) has been named one of the Top 25 Canadian Immigrants of 2022.

This weekend, on March 12 and 13, the department of dance presents Intersections, featuring new choreography by MFA student choreographers, Rachel da Silveira Gorman, Jessica Stuart, Ashvini Sundaram, and Yui Ugai, performed by the York Dance Ensemble (YDE).
