For Students

Career Options

Many students interested in applying to Fine Arts are faced with questions from their parents and friends such as: "What are you going to do with a degree in Fine Arts?" A degree in Fine Arts is the best preparation that anyone can have for almost any job.

Obvious career paths that include performer, visual artist, filmmaker, musician, actor, curator, and administrator - we have many graduates who have gone on to pursue careers in these fields.

We also have former students who are now researchers, writers, and teachers who, through the nature of their work, share their love of the arts with others.

Many other career possibilities exist for Fine Arts alumni. As a Fine Arts student, you will develop skills that are applicable to many different careers. When asked to list the qualities and skills they most value in their employees, employers identify:

  • the ability to think creatively,
  • the ability to work collaboratively, and
  • the ability to problem solve effectively

In the Fine Arts, we work this way all the time. Teamwork is a fact of life for artists, whether the task is preparing for a performance, directing a film or mounting an exhibition.

There are other qualities that make Fine Arts graduates special:

  • artists are passionate about what they do,
  • they understand that a deadline is a deadline (think of the opening of a show), and
  • they are self-disciplined.

So if you, or someone you know, is wondering about the career prospects for a Fine Arts graduate, be confident about the possibilities.
